Forums and combat

Our forums are now open at http://ritualsoftheold.com/community/

We are using Flarum forum software, which is really cool but completely not production ready. I wanted to try it anyway. There is a slight risk of there being security issues so if you are going to use the forums use them at your own discretion and preferably don’t recycle passwords (which you shouldn’t be doing anyway). And if you want to be on the safe side please open up a new email account for the registration.

Remember, it’s very experimental. But now we have a place where you can make suggestions and give feedback.

Looking forward to it! See you there!

TVdata, our 3D artist, has almost finished the rigging of the player model but won’t be starting doing the animations until he comes back from his summer vacation.

Bensku, our lead coder, has been progressing steadily with the foundation of the game but there isn’t anything to show yet.

I’ve been busy with the forums and developing ideas and plans for the game.

Particularly I’ve given the combat system some thought and I’ve spent a lot of time researching old manuscripts and videos of medieval sword fighting techniques - which I would very much like to implement in the game, but it would mean a lot of work doing all the character animations so we’ll have to see whether or not we have to compromise there.

I’ve also been thinking about implementing a combat system where you press and hold a control button for the melee hand that you wish to use and then you aim with the mouse, press and hold the attack button and thrust with the mouse as hard as you wish to hit (the damage would be calculated after considering various factors, the force of the mouse thrust just decides the force and commitment that you put behind the strike). The movement pattern of the mouse and the situation you are in will decide which fighting technique you will use. You could also block attacks and make counter moves depending on the situation if you’re fast and clever enough.

So the combat would probably favor those with mad mouse skills and quick reflexes but the attacks would probably be only initiated with the mouse, ie. they would not happen completely in real time to avoid some issues with the client-server lag. Also this would make a more elaborate move vs. counter move fighting system than a 100% real time wild flailing with a sword (I’ve got a better ping than you! I win!) could ever be.

The average one on one PVP fight between unarmored opponents with swords would probably last about 15 seconds in Rituals of the old before ending in a horrible death of one of the fighters. So, yes, we are aiming for realism there. Stab -> you are incapacitated and you are in for a slow and painful death if you are not killed instantly. If you don’t die from the shock or a blood loss then you would most likely die slowly from an infection.

And no, there are not going to be any magical healing potions or the magic of modern medical science in the game. We will give you only pain, disease and suffering.

Until next time!
