Playermodel sketch

Finished making sketches of the playermodel

I’ve been designing what the playermodel should look like for a couple of days . I will use the sketch below as a reference when I eventually start making the 3D model.

We were debating for a long time whether we should make the models more realistic looking or more blocky. We eventually came to the conclusion that blocky models would be best suited for our game.

Blocky entity models will be significantly faster to make, UV map, texture, rig and animate than more detailed models.

Trying to make too realistic models could mean the difference between success or failure of the whole project. Detailed models would mean months or years of extra work. Also the skill level required to make good looking complex 3D models is much much greater than with simple models.

Of course we could make complex models with enough time invested, but since we don’t have any professional 3D artists in our team at this stage it would not be time wisely spent. The end result would simply not look as good with our humble skills than it would by using simpler models. It would also make the modding of the game much harder for the average player.

I’m pretty happy with the sketches at the moment. As you can see below the player model will have joints in all the important places. The player models should be able to make all kinds of gestures with their hands, hug, grab things, sit down, crawl, etc. We should also be able to put more finesse into the player model’s movement in general.
